Sudan's Civil War: Mediation Challenges and the U.S. Role

Three months after violence erupted in Khartoum, the latest conflict in Sudan has killed over 3,000 people and displaced nearly 3 million, while mediation efforts have failed to halt clashes between the forces of Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo. How is the violence affecting Sudan’s humanitarian situation and other U.S. interests? And which international actors are best situated to influence the warring parties and advance a durable ceasefire?

To discuss these and other issues, The Washington Institute is pleased to announce a virtual Policy Forum with Reem Abbas, Alex Rondos, and Yasir Zaidan. David Schenker, the director of the Institute’s Rubin Family Arab Politics Program, will moderate the discussion.

Reem Abbas is a nonresident fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP), focusing on land, conflict, and resources in Sudan. She has been working on communications and advocacy for Sudanese civil society groups and international organizations for more than ten years.

Alex Rondos is a senior advisor with the Africa Center at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He formerly served as the European Union’s Special Representative for the Horn of Africa.

Yasir Zaidan is a lecturer on international affairs at the National University-Sudan and a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington.
